It takes me all of twenty minutes to figure out the dynamic of the family and which roles they play.

Personality-wise, Elise takes after her mom, sweet, welcoming, and a nurturer.

She’s curvy, with light blonde hair, and pale eyes, still a fox, giving me a glimpse into a future I doubt I’ll ever get to see.

Her dad is the kind of dad I hope to be. He’s strong, protective but with a sense of humor and doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Given the obvious Scottish heritage on display throughout the house, I’m not surprised to see it’s his genes that give Elise and Tracey their complexion and red locks.

As we start to eat a lentil casserole, Tracey keeps up a steady stream of bullshit, laden with a few nods to what a wonderful mother she is, and how useless the nanny is.

It must be exhausting living with her, no wonder Brett has that tight smile stuck on his face.

Poor bastard.

Elise is quiet, either preparing for a fight I’d rather not have, or biting her tongue, probably out of habit.

I slide a look at her mom and dad and study them as Tracey talks about herself.

“Brett and I were thinking about going on vacation before the baby’s born, maybe to the Bahamas,” Tracey says.

While Brett shuffles in his seat, obviously not sold on the idea, I get a snapshot of what this must be like at all these dinners.

I don’t know how the fuck Elise has managed to be in the same room as her sister, let alone suffered through years of dinners and family holidays just like this.

Every chance Tracey gets she brings up how wonderful her life is, and subtle comments about how thrilled Brett is to be married to her and not to Elise.

She’s so sly, if I wasn’t actively studying her, I may not have noticed.

No wonder Ellie’s learned to pretend she’s happy when she’s not.

It’s a survival mechanism.
